From science to fiction

Samantha Wheeler's love of animals began when she was given a pet tortoise as a child. That passion led her to study agriculture and build a career working with dairy farmers and teaching science before turning to writing in 2011.

Since publishing her first children's novel, inspired by Australia's koalas, Samantha has written a range of acclaimed books including Smooch & Rose, Spud & Charli, Mister Cassowary, Wombat Warriors, Turtle Trackers and Everything I've Never Said. Her work has been recognised through numerous literary award nominations and honours.

Through her stories, Samantha hopes to inspire young readers to care for animals, protect the environment and recognise the difference one person can make.

The Inspiration behind the Author

One of Samantha's greatest inspirations is her daughter, Charlotte, who lives with Rett syndrome. Through Charlotte's strength, resilience and unique way of experiencing the world, Samantha has gained a deeper appreciation for communication, connection and the many different ways people interact with those around them.

Charlotte has influenced not only Samantha's outlook on life, but also the compassion and empathy woven throughout her stories. Her journey continues to inspire Samantha's belief that every voice matters and that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Home for Samantha is a peaceful acreage property where animals, open spaces and nature are part of everyday life. Whether she's caring for animals, exploring the bush or simply watching wildlife from her backyard, these experiences continually spark ideas for new stories.

Many of Samantha's books are inspired by her love of animals and her deep connection to the Australian environment. Living closely with nature allows her to bring authenticity and heart to her writing, creating stories that encourage children to appreciate wildlife and understand the important role they can play in protecting it.

Through storytelling, Samantha hopes to share the wonder of the natural world and inspire the next generation of animal lovers and environmental champions.
